I created this image of a terrestrial shrubland during a two-week National Park Artist in Residence at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. I was struck by the texture contrasts of dune grasses, oak and conifer trees. I emphasized these contrasts by hand sewing paper and fabric amidst the painted sand dune background. Using charcoal, I completed the compositional sketch on stretched fabric as I observed the landscape for several hours. While back in my studio, I began the layering process with collage material.
