I created this painting of a wetland during my two-week National Parks Artist in Residence at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. It was created in one, five-hour sitting within the landscape. During that time, the birds of the marshlands made themselves known. I watched red-headed woodpeckers climb trees, blue herons stalk their prey, and ruby-throated hummingbirds hurry here and there. I witnessed the landscape change in sound, light, and color. The intricate grasses and wildflowers were my starting point as I expanded outwards with looser brush strokes.
